Location
The Root Chakra, known in Sanskrit as Muladhara (“root support”), sits at the base of the spine in the perineum, between the anus and the genitals. It forms the foundation of the entire chakra system, anchoring the body to the earth like the roots of a tree.
Colour
Red. A deep, vibrant crimson that evokes blood, life force, and primal energy. This colour stimulates survival instincts and grounds scattered energy.
Crystals
Red Jasper: dense, earthy, and slow-releasing; strengthens stamina.
Black Tourmaline: shields against electromagnetic stress and psychic drain.
Hematite: metallic, heavy, magnetic; draws excess energy down into the earth.
Garnet: ignites passion for life while stabilizing the will to survive.
Petals or Sub-vortices
Four petals, inscribed with the Sanskrit seed letters vaṁ, śaṁ, ṣaṁ, saṁ. The square geometry of the four petals symbolizes the four directions, the four elements in their gross form, and the stability of matter.
Organs & Systems
Skeletal structure (bones, spine, teeth)
Large intestine and rectum (elimination)
Legs and feet (locomotion)
Adrenal glands (fight-or-flight cortisol)
Blood and cell formation
Sense of smell (the most primitive sense tied to survival)
Psychology
Instinctual mind – the domain of fear, tribal identity, and the “reptilian brain.” When balanced, it manifests as:
Unshakable trust in life
Physical vitality and discipline
Healthy boundaries and belonging
When deficient: apathy, disconnection, chronic fatigue, hoarding.
When excessive: greed, rage, paranoia, materialism without meaning.Core Life Lesson“I am safe. I belong to the earth.”
Life Lesson
The Root Chakra teaches that true security is not accumulated—it is remembered. Every breath, every footstep, every heartbeat is evidence that the universe has already provided the ground beneath you. The lesson is to release the illusion of separateness and root into the present moment, trusting that existence itself is the ultimate inheritance.
